By Bill Walthall

No shock to any of you who have followed The Project for any amount of time: I’m a geek (I mean, come on, a Shakespeare blog is pretty damned niche). And like any normal person, I am prone to find myself going down a web-browsing rabbit-hole occasionally.

Why do I mention this?

Well, welcome to my latest obsession…

But first a digression:

In my head, I have a couple of dream productions, waiting to be mounted. One’s a wild and raucous The Comedy of Errors, contemporary, set in the fictional border town of Ephesus, Texas, on the Day of the Dead, complete with a roving Mariachi band.

The other is Andronicus. Yes, I’ve left off the first name (for now). While I could cast a male in the titular lead, I’m fascinated by the idea of a female head of the Andronici, a perfect foil for Tamora, queen of the Goths. Anywhoo, it’s this production that got my geek spidey-senses tingling. I see production in some weird parallel universe–ancient, barbaric, but looking more Mad Max than Maximus Decimus Meridius (that’s the Russell Crowe character in Gladiator, if you’re wondering). So I’m thinking of this weird mix of armor, a little Roman, a little samurai, chainmail, plates, etc. But how would you do it (particularly on a community theater budget)?

Bill, meet the rabbit-hole.

The YouTube videos on this are freaking fascinating. The stuff the cosplay community can do with EVA foam is pretty intense. My wife is getting worried. Of course, it doesn’t help that while I was repairing dining room chairs on Sunday, I streamed an entire playlist of this stuff to the living room tv (is this why that tv suddenly went kaput on Monday? …are the appliances concerned for my mental balance as well?).

In all my copious free-time (cough, that’s a joke, cough), I think I want to make chainmail.

The healthy side of my psyche is whispering, “Back away from the edge, Bill…”
