Reality check, there are a lot of people who are unaware of Shakespeare. Press Association reports that one third of kids does not know Shakespeare, while a about a quarter of adults have never read his play. That is still disturbing, despite recent popular developments such as Shakesperience, an iPad app that creates an immersive experience of Shakespeare’s plays. This certainly helps the understanding of the Bard, but what would it take to increase the awareness of his existence?
A lot of us know and love Shakespeare. But reality is, a lot of people all over the world never really had the chance to get to know him. So many will not get to read or experience an appropriate Shakespearean play for a season or re-imagine a restless Shakespearean world as Neil MacGregor did. Some inmates get a chance to experience redemption through Shakespeare, but that is an exemption rather than a rule. Getting to know Shakespeare is actually a privilege.
I do not have answers. Rather, I have questions. Shakespeare is so familiar to a lot of us that we forget those that never had the change to get to know and experience Shakespeare. What can we do? How can we help spread the world and imagination of Shakespeare?
