Several Calls for Manuscripts and other Bookish News | The Scrivener

Welcome to The Scrivener! This is Lindsay here to inform you of the latest in scholarship news. This week, we have a number of calls for manuscripts, a plethora of conference notifications, and some information about fellowship deadlines.

CALLS FOR MANUSCRIPTS

The deadline has been extended for a special issue of Shakespeare Quarterly on the topic of ‘Not Shakespeare’ (i.e. Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline drama by theater-poets other than Shakespeare) to be released the summer of 2014. Full manuscripts are due by 1 November, and more information is available here.

A special issue of  European Journal of English Studies on ‘Mendacity In Early Modern Literature And Culture’ is scheduled to appear in 2015. The deadline for detailed proposals is 31 October. Read the full call here.

21 October is the deadline for proposals for an edited collection on ‘Decadence in English Literature’. Contributions are sought from all periods, including the early modern. Note the requirement that contributors must hold a PhD, and read more details here.

Borrowers and Lenders: The Journal of Shakespeare and Appropriation has announced (and is currently seeking submissions for) a new section on ‘Digital Appropriations’. They’re particularly interested in thesis-driven reviews of digital editions, as well as of Shakespeare-related projects, databases, visualizations, etc. No particular deadline is listed, and you can read more about it here.

Just when I think I’ve seen the last of the cfps for Shakespeare 450 in Paris next April, another comes to my attention!  October 15 is the deadline to submit a proposal for the ‘Shakespeare and Architecture’ panel. Read the details here

Proposals are also due by 31 October for Othello’s Island, the 2nd Annual Conference of Mediterranean and Levantine Cultural History​ in the Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance Periods, which is set for 9-12 April 2014​ at the Cornaro Institute, Cyprus. Read the full call here.

The Mid-America Theatre Conference seeks proposals for the 35th Annual Theatre History Symposium to be held in Cleveland from 6-9 March 2014. Participants are asked to engage the question: ‘What might high stakes history look like and what roles might “revision” play in that process?’ Proposals are due 15 October, and you can read the full call here.

A conference on ‘Revisiting Early Modern Prophecies’ will be held from 26-28 June 2014 at Goldsmiths, University of London. Paper and/or panel proposals (on topics such as apocalyptic predictions, the Antichrist, millenarianism, irenicism, wonders and miracles, astrology and divination, ecumenical movements, religious utopias, mystical networks, enthusiasts, and female mystics) are due by 31 October. Abstracts are due by 31 October for a symposium on ‘Outing Outsiders: Exclusion in Medieval and Early Modern Europe’ to be hosted at Trinity College in Dublin on 25 January 2014. More details are provided here.

For those interested in early modern intellectual culture and the history of science, also due 15 October are paper and/or panel proposals for Scientiae 2014 . This third annual conference on the knowledge practices of the early modern period (ca. 1450-1750) will take place at the University of Vienna on 23-25 April 2014, and the full call can be seen here.

From 4-5 December 2014, the University of Edinburgh will be hosting a conference called ‘Between Apes and Angels: Human and Animal in the Early Modern World’. Proposals are due by 31 October for papers examining the theme of human-animal relations and related topics. Read the call here.

Submissions are sought for a one-day symposium entitled ‘Prisons of Stone, Word, and Flesh: Medieval and Early Modern Captivity’, which will take place at Brown University on 21 February 2014. Proposals are due by 1 November, and more details can been seen here.

FELLOWSHIP REMINDERS

The Folger Shakespeare Library has launched a new online portal for fellowship applications. Remember that applications for long-term fellowships are due 1 November, and apply here.

31 October is the deadline to apply for a Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowship of up to three months at the John Rylands Research Institute, Manchester. Read more here.
