Sonnet Man teams with Stratford
MLive reports that the New York hip-hop artist known as “The Sonnet Man” will team with actors and teachers from Canada’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival to bring workshops to Michigan. Devon Glover performs Shakespeare’s sonnets as rap pieces and uses his performances to teach students about the playwright’s use of language and its meaning.
Organizers did not provide MLive with specific details about the schools involved, but noted that actor Brad Hodder and other artists would join The Sonnet Man in providing student workshops that focus on sonnets as well as combat, dance, and writing. The program will reportedly take place in the Detroit and Ann Arbor areas.
The Stratford Festival hosts a “Shakespeare School” summer theater program for young performers. Varying age groups are divided into companies and most include workshops. The Sonnet Man’s website mentions that he will appear in a “residency” in Detroit with Stratford Shakespeare. You can catch up on Glover’s work in our previous coverage here.
