by Heather Eddy, Helena in LITsummer

I think of myself as a musician, not an actor. My acting experience before LITsummer consisted mostly of a few lines in a musical before bursting back into song. When I came to audition, I told them I was interested in the musical that is happening later this season; anything involving Shakespeare seemed way out of reach for me. All I knew of Shakespeare I learned from a few viewings of Shakespeare in the Park and watching the old black and white Romeo and Juliet in high school English class. I said yes, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had never seen anything by Sweet Tea before–and certainly not anything like a Lit show. At on of our first rehearsals we did a read-through, but instead of reading the script, everyone read their personal modern translation. The interpretations from my fellow cast members were full of hilarious jokes, bits, and pop culture references, and I was blown away. I’ve realized now that I can dive into Shakespeare for myself and surface with more understanding than I was expecting. LITsummer is outrageous and silly and so much fun, but it has also served to grow me as an actor. I’m learning how to ‘make a decision’ (note to self: this is something actors say) and to go for broke every time I’m delivering something that’s wonderfully absurd. You’re going to love it. See you there.
